LAWANG’s Empowering Initiative for Women in Kandahar

Breaking Boundaries: LAWANG’s Empowering Initiative for Women in Kandahar

In a province where societal norms restrict the opportunities available to women, LAWANG, in collaboration with NRC, pioneered a groundbreaking project in Kandahar. The project aimed to empower 15 female artisans by imparting valuable skills that not only defied traditional constraints but also provided a means of income for these resilient women. Over the course of five months, each dedicated artisan received a monthly stipend of 8,000 AFN (equivalent to 114 USD). This financial support was a crucial lifeline, enabling these women to focus on acquiring new skills and generating income, all within the confines of their homes. Kandahar’s conservative environment often poses challenges for women seeking employment or skill development opportunities. This project was a testament to LAWANG’s commitment to breaking down these barriers. The ultimate goal was to increase the capacity of these women, allowing them to work from home and pave the way for sustainable income in the future. In total, LAWANG played a pivotal role in contributing to the country’s economy, injecting a substantial sum of 600,000 AFN (equivalent to 8,571 USD) into the Kandahar community through this program.
LAWANG expresses sincere gratitude to NRC and CordAid for their vital contribution to this transformative initiative. The impact of this project extends beyond the immediate gains for these women, contributing to a larger narrative of empowerment and inclusivity in Kandahar.
